From: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7566019.stm

...Mr Obama told the pastor that America's greatest moral failure was its insufficient help to the disadvantaged. The Democratic candidate noted that the Bible had quoted Jesus as saying: "Whatever you do for the least of my brothers, you do for me." He said the maxim should apply to victims of poverty, sexism and racism.

Followed by:

Speaking first, Mr Obama defended his support for abortion and same-sex civil unions, but said marriage should only be between a man and a woman.

Come November, it will be "vote for the lesser of two evils" time again -_-

[music |Jonny Greenwoord - There Will be Blood OST]

A healing day.

The buzzing of the alarm woke me at 7AM — one has to wake up early to beat the Florida heat. I checked my tire pressure and donned my helmet in time to receive a call from Melanie. We talked briefly and I wished her good luck on her Master's thesis presentation at APA in Boston this morning — she is far braver than I ;]

Fourteen miles out on the trail, I noticed two smallish spotted baby deer youngsters. They were absolutely fearless and allowed me to approach within ~10 feet of them. I waited for their mother to appear, but she never did. I did notice that they were eating grass so maybe they had been weaned and left to mature on their own already? I do hope the mother wasn't killed by an automobile or gun-toting Hawthorne yokel.

Turns out that the sky was so overcast that waking early wouldn't have been necessary. In fact, I was rained on for the final 16 miles or so :[

I returned, puttered on the computer and practiced for my upcoming solo performance, read a bit, and then decided to attempt to nap — something I can rarely do. I succeeded, and slept ~3 hours.

Following the nap, I took a walk around the GRU plant to regain some alterness and mobility and then PAIP'ed a bit at the local corporate coffee shop. After drinking Volta, I can barely stand the stuff at Starbucks. Unfortunately, the décor and atmosphere at Volta is a bit cold and makes me uneasy. It really helps to have some background chatter, a bit of clutter, and warm colors and lighting.

Following that, I received a call from the Phoriestar, wherein we talked about P-90 guitar pickups, the news that Leatherface is reportedly playing at the Gainesville music fest this year, and his lethal and deranged clients. I reviewed some drafts of his Breast Milk Man comic that has been years in the making. I will be crafting a website to make it available to the masses ^_^

Now! To an ESS show I go!

Ironing, Yip Yip, Lissajou, and Last Year's Model ho!

Good Reads [Aug. 15th, 2008|10:33 pm]

[music |Matthew Garrison - Improvision]

I recently finished a couple books I picked up at the Book Lady in Savannah.

1) Anatomy of the Orchestra

In the UF symphonic orchestra, I traced the low end of harmonies and contributed to melodic content as a cellist, and was exposed to the organization and logistics of large musical ensemble as stage manager. This book helped me to revisit the world of classical western music that was my first introduction to instrumental performance and ensemble playing. It is organized into sections according to instrument families (strings, woodwinds, brass, etc.) and provides the history of each major orchestral instrument, its range and limitations, its traditional usage, and how its role has evolved over the centuries. I tend to be drawn to books that cut through the midsection of a broad field of knowledge and leave you with a strong framework from which to understand that field. This is just such a book.

2) Why Buildings Stand Up

This book is concerned with the role of structure in architecture and the importance of the structural engineer and construction contractor to the erection of great buildings. The book is organized into sections according to major structural components, building types, etc. My favorite sections included the chapter devoted to the Eiffel tower and the chapters on skyscraper and bridge construction — chapters that have filled in some gaps in personal understanding of how large structures are designed and supported. It's been some years since I've been challenged to think in terms of materials, mass, and geometry, so it was refreshing to read this book.

Hydrogen Arm - Live at Action Research 28 [Aug. 14th, 2008|10:23 pm]

This is a recording corresponding to the previous mentioned Action Research concert. Unicornicopia, This Year is the Membrane, and Ami Dang were fantastic. Each of them brought a vibe and approach rarely heard around these parts.

Below is a very loud and horribly clipping (but very enjoyable) recording of our set. I left the track raw and unedited because I enjoy the clumsy banging and funny conversations in the gaps between where the "real music" happens. My contribution to the piece consisted of distorted and filtered drum machine, pedal-based and microphone-based feedback, and processed and unprocessed vocals. Loren's contribution consisted of processed improvised sequenced synth, no-input mixer feedback loop, and samples.

The piece is about 20 minutes long and contains many megabytes of EEEEEE, FSHHHHHH, bBBbBBBbbbBbbbb, and brbrblrlbrlbrlbrl.

Enjoy ^_^

It is said that the Black Lord Nerol, The Pestilent Horror of Divad N’Ohj, and the Blaspheming and Pustulent Yra H’Caz converged at a point in space-time with close enough proximity to the realm of Man that many night-time dreamers and men of infirm mind could actually hear the unspeakable dealings of the three unfathomable nightmares from beyond. These unfortunate souls were driven to mortal self-mutilation in an effort to rid themselves of the unholy taint.

Horrifyingly, a digital "M.P. Three" audio recording was captured of this event:

Got the new Kaku hardcover, the Douglas Adams leather bound complete works - Under $50

2 bottles Russian Standard Vodka (Русский стандарт), and a bottle each of Aberlour (Single Malt), Santa Teresa 1796 (Venezualan rum), and Cross Keys (Barbados rum) - all for $100

... I LOVE it when liquor stores and bars get sold - by LAW they have to sell everything bought under the license... so I got all that for at least 1/2 off.

I need a fan for the northbridge of my motherboard, it's a DFI LANParty NF4 SLI-DR. Anyone know where to find the fan? The system is overclocked, and running at 4.0V (not the standard 3.3V it came set at).

I was hoping someone might know right off hand about the fan, so I don't have to take it apart, measure it, and then go find one. It's a weird, little, tiny fan, which is unfortunately place underneath the Vid card.

Toy Talk: Chutes & Ladders [Aug. 12th, 2008|07:05 pm]

princessaiy
For those unaware of the web logs of Toy Talk, it is a series I write taking children toys and comparing them to life, as I know or as I see it. All archive entries are located on my livejournal on their original dates and in their entirety as a group on myspace at the February 13 2007 mark.

Chutes & Ladders a game. The object of the game is to spin the dial and move forward the amount of spaces specified. No more than 6 moves per spin, no more than one spin per move. The board goes to 100. 100 little boxes and some have ladders in them and if you land on the box then you consequently get to climb the ladder to a higher space thus making you closer to box 100 and winning! However there are also chutes; slides that when landing on a box with a chute you have to slide down to a lower numbered box making box 100 that much more farther away. There are up to 4 players allowed on the board per game. There are 2 girls and 2 boys - at least that's how it was when I grew up.

Spin to see who goes first, the person with the highest number goes first followed by the next highest number.

It should be as simple as one, two, three. It....should be. Life feeds us numbers all the time. At the DMV, at restaurants, our cel numbers, our bills, and hell some of us even "crunch" numbers at work. We get up, go to school or work or wherever we need to be and we do it because we have to move forward. There is an ultimate goal in all of us - somewhere. Depending on the numbers on the clock, on the paycheck and in the bank we move up the ladder. This is what we grow up to do. We spin the wheel and see where the arrow points and we move forward without really knowing if its gonna advance us or put us back a few steps. And further more we don't know that after we climb that ladder and move up in our life if the next spin, or step, is going to send us plummeting down this path allowing us an un-cushioned landing on our backside. But regardless, we always get up and keep moving forward. At least that's what we should do, that's what the rules of the game are. Through wind, rain, sleet...through the blazing sun, through the trials and tribulations, through the tests....the marriages the funerals, the unemployment, the birth of unexpected kids, the winning of the lottery....through unpacking and repacking, through ruining dinner when you've never cooked to getting your college degree - we climb and climb and climb, and so many of us fall and fall fall....well - slide. The thing that keeps us moving after the valley's is we know there will be peaks ahead. The thing that makes us get up and brush ourselves off, is that THAT is what we have always done. Its what our parents told us to do when we fell, what our friends helped us do when the bully pushed us down, its what the tutor helped us do when we didn't get the subject and failing the tests, it's what our aunts and uncles and grandparents all wanted for us, its what our coaches always told us to do....so we did. We get up, we brush ourselves off, we take another spin and move forward again. We keep reaching for the top, the end, that ultimate place of contentment because you finished! And while we spin only once and pass it on we learn patience, that's it's not always our turn to move forward or up, or even backwards or down. We learn that whatever we do is actually in OUR hands, not someone elses. Its not a team game this Chutes and Ladders, its every man for himself and we all want the same things but it may take some of us longer to get there because some of the ladders are shorter than others, some of the chutes are longer than others...but you'll get there. What's great is that in a game like this, everyone would stick around until the last person finished. The game wasn't over until all 4 people made it to the top. Sure there will be first places and second places, there will be presidents of the companies and vice presidents of the companies, then the managers and assistants then service representatives....

which one are you? which one are you trying to be? Does it matter to you how quickly you finish or get to the top. Is it fair to assume that once you reach the top you're going to see how the others make it? Because often in this world we just keep moving forward and once we get to the top we keep going. The game wants you to encourage others to keep reaching. It wants you to know that you may finish first in this game but there will be other games and wouldn't you want support while you're still trying to get up and move forward? Do you remember to take turns in your life? Once you reach any point of success do you pass on the torch so others may try to also reach success?

When you spin, or take that step forward, and you see that you are going up or going down how fast do you make your move? And my advice to you is always proceed with caution, and enjoy the ups as you can appreciate the downs because even in spinning then stepping, it's all for a reason. There's always an end in site, there will always be a next step after you believe its over. Its just how the game is played, you just have to decide your approach in how you play it. Not much strategy is involved, just spin....and move forward - but as always...watch your step.

I'm back in Vista. It's hot and lonely here. The upside is I did go to the gym today and it felt great. 30 minutes on the treadmill walking and running and 20 minutes on the bike. I have to look for a job this week, that's always fun and I returned to school on saturday so tuesday will be my second day back. Its just as I left it. Like a play with the same choreography and direction but some of the ensemble has changed. It was nice to see 2 people there. One of my teachers and one girl that was in my class.

Life seems to be rolling just the same, but different. I'm different, he's different and soon everything else will be different too.

What would you like to drink with your meat? [Aug. 10th, 2008|07:35 pm]

[music |1000 - The Open Dance of Meat]

Really. What Nickelodeon-loving child of the late 90's doesn't occasionally construct nonsense phrases that prominently feature those magical words CHEESE, BOOGERS or MEAT? Behold.

1000 - The Open Dance of Meat

runtime: 8:54 / filesize: 12.1MB / format: MP3

This song was improvised using the venerable Audiomulch and a handful of free VST plugins. Four samples were used: the obvious bass drum, tom-tom, and ride cymbal and the less obvious outtake from Jen's Song by the defunct band Jettison Fading wherein Monsignor Phæderyc speaks a short phrase.

Fun facts:
  • 1000 was the name under which I recorded my first electronic improvisations. EE was the name given to my early acoustic and song-based recordings.
  • The song was created the very first morning after my move away to Gainesville back in August 2002.
  • The song was selected for release by the now inactive Zvukoprocessor for an international electronic music compilation named INTERCONTINENTAL ZVUKOPROCESSING. The label owner ran across the little Angelfire site I had set up. I was asked to contribute to the compilation and readily agreed. I had no idea my little bedroom improvisation would ever spark any interest. Months went by and I stopped hearing about the compilation. Then, one day, a package arrived from Tel Aviv. I had absolutely no idea what the package contained and was ready to turn it in to the post office for fear I was shipped an explosive device (seriously). Turns out the package contained many copies of the compilation ^_^
  • After a catastrophic hard drive crash and a silent failure of an Angelfire hosting site I was forced to say goodbye to the meat. It's a good thing I recently found the "bomb" in the back of my closet ^_^

[music |robots in disguise - turn it up]

After a decade of going out to eat and spending lot$ of dollar$ on $u$hi... I finally made some myself. Anyone who wants some ideas on how to get started, or basic instructions... feel free to comment and I'll give details on making sushi in general.

I made 5 rolls using various combinations of:
  • 1/2 c shredded carrots marinated in a homemade ponzu (lemon, soy, vinegar)
  • (1) sliced cucumber
  • (1) sliced, roasted red pepper marinated in a teriyaki/balsamic glaze (rub down in olive/sesame oil, bake for 20 min or until lightly browned at 400°, then marinate)
  • (2) roasted portabellos, same method as peppers
  • 1/2 sweet potato, sliced into sticks, then temp battered and fried in peanut oil (also yummy when roasted)
  • tempura tofu
  • plain firm tofu
  • cream cheese
Sriracha spiced mayo and eel sauce on the side.

Next time I need to remember to get sesame seeds for sprinkling on top/outside
Other veggie sushi favorites include roasted asparagus and fresh avocado.
To make this vegan, use toffuti cc and nayo!
